Charles “Kip” Compton, Senior Director & General Manager, Video & Content Platforms Business Unit, Cisco Systems, Inc.

Kip leads a Cisco organization focused on enabling the transformation of entertainment and television in our convergent multi-device world using advanced IP networking and content delivery technologies.  In this role he is responsible for the strategic direction, product development, business partnering and delivery of leading-edge products such as the Cisco Content Delivery System for TV on-demand, web/streaming and mobile content delivery.

Mr. Compton has more than 14 years of senior leadership experience in systems and network engineering including roles in both equipment and service providers.  His areas of interest include working closely with customers to solve strategic challenges such as service velocity, feature integration, content distribution, targeted advertising and digital media security.

Kip assumed his current position in January 2006 after serving three years with Comcast Cable Communications as vice president of video and media engineering.  In that role, he led the team responsible for developing Comcast’s digital cable, simulcast, security, switched broadcast, video on-demand, and streaming media infrastructure and services.

Kip held roles at Cisco from 1998 to 2001 as director of technology strategy and later director of entertainment solutions, responsible for defining Cisco’s technology and solutions strategy in areas including cable, digital video, streaming media and XML/Web services.  These roles included Cisco engagements with cable operators, middleware partners and set top manufacturers on iTV and DOCSIS set top box projects in North American and Europe.

Kip earlier served as director of Internet Systems and Services for MediaOne Group, a cable operator purchased by AT&T.  Prior, Kip was manager of strategic technology and programs for AT&T New Media Services.  Earlier in his career he worked for SNET/SBC in their internet and video services development organization.  Prior Kip conducted research at MIT with partners including Turner Broadcast and IBM on networked content and services. 

Kip holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science and Master of Engineering degree in electrical engineering and computer science, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as well as a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Wharton.
